KEY ISSUES & STATUS Dec 12, 2024 Page 1 of 7 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Reduction of Unintentional POPs through Waste Management in a Circular Economy (P172770) 4.1 Implementation Status and Key Decisions The project has established a fully operational Project Management Unit (PMU) at the Ministry of Environment (MoE) since January 2024 and engaged with concerned local stakeholders in Akkar and Nabatieh for the implementation of solid waste management measures to reduce open burning of waste which release UPOPs and other harmful pollutants. However, due to the escalation of the security situation in South Lebanon, the planning of interventions in South Lebanon have been put on hold, while preparations are underway for the implementation of the sanitary landfill and other solid waste management interventions in Akkar. MoE is also following up with UNOPS, who is executing several activities of the project, and has initiated all studies and technical assistance planned under the project. 5.
