KEY ISSUES & STATUS 4.1 Implementation Status and Key Decisions The project is making significant progress including the provision of inputs for sustainable land and water management practices, forest management planning and restoration, formation of the Community Resource Management Area (CREMA), wildlife monitoring, online mining license application and institutional strengthening for artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) regulation. Environmental and social due diligence for several planned activities are also progressing well. The project, through participatory processes, has supported the development of 417 community watershed management plans in the Northern Savannah Zone (NSZ) and Cocoa Forest Landscape (CFL). Based on these plans, 58,374 smallholder farmers have received training and inputs to implement sustainable landscape management (SLM) practices including agroforestry, of which 50% are women and 18% are youths. The project has also supported 172 beneficiaries (79% female) with alternative livelihoods including small ruminants rearing, poultry and soap making. An Integrated Water Resources Management Plan (IWRM) has been developed for Black Volta Basin, bringing over 3.3 million hectares of land area under spatial land use planning. Over 1.6 million hectares of land area have also been brought under sustainable landscape management practices. An assessment of the Protected Areas (PAs) supported by the project that is Mole National Park, Gbele Resource Reserve and Digya National Park, indicates improved management effectiveness in all three PAs since project inception (see results framework for specific scores). The project has also supported the restoration of 3,779.4 ha of degraded areas in forest reserves. In addition, fifteen (15) Community Resource Management Area (CREMA) by-laws have been completed and approved by their respective Municipal and District Assembles and Regional Coordinating Councils. The project supported the drafting of two legislative instruments related to protection and management of water bodies for parliamentary approval. Two Minerals Commission (MinCom) offices at Wa and Bolgatanga were renovated in 2024, and the renovation of three (3) additional MinCom offices at Tarkwa, Dunkwa and Prestea has commenced. Additionally, the project supported the upgrade of the Minerals Cadestre Administration System (MCAS) to facilitate registration and licensing of small-scale gold miners. The sika-bukyia (direct smelting mercury-free technology) has also been upgraded to improve gold recovery rate after processing and reduce processing time. In 2024, the District Mining Committees (established by the project) trained 9,570 concession owners and mine workers (12% female) across nine mining districts. The project also supported the installation of water quality monitoring equipment for the Water Resources Commission (WRC) to strengthen data-driven policy and management decisions. Additionally, the project supported the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) with gold assaying equipment including weighing scales and XRF machines. 5.
