Extensive consultations have taken place with affected communities which have informed the design and location of ground water abstraction galleries and rainwater harvesting (both on North Tarawa) and coastal protection (on South Tarawa). Consultation also helped secure permission to use the land necessary for the construction of the village galleries (still on-going) and Rain Water Page 1 of 6 The World Bank Report No: ISR14603 Harvesting (RWH) tanks (completed). Design and bidding document for six RWH sites have been completed, and the contract is expected to be signed by July 1, 2014. Final design of coastal protection measures to be constructed under KAP III (sites 2, 4, 6) have been received (site 2) or are due in mid-June 2014 (sites 4 and 6). Similarly, those designed under KAP III but to be constructed under KRRP and the Kiribati Aviation Investment Project (KAIP) have been finalized (sites 1 and 5) or are nearly completed (sites 10, 11, 15N and 15E). Environmental licenses at all sites except for 4 & 6 have been obtained; the licenses for sites 4 and 6 are to be processed once the final designs are submitted. MPWU/KAP III Public Disclosure Copy is currently negotiating an amendment to the design firm’s contract to update the EMPs of all three projects (KAP III, KRRP and KAIP) to adequately reflect the coastal protection works. Mangrove replanting on five of the seven planned Outer Islands -- Abemama, Abaiang, Marakei, Tabiteuea North and Beru--- at demonstration sites in selected villages that experience severe coastal erosion have progressed as planned with strong community involvement on all islands. At the request of Government, the program is to provide dedicated support (commencing early June 2014) to the inter-Ministerial Water Reserves Task Force to develop a road map with short and long term options for the effective protection and management of the Buota and Bonriki reserves, critical to South Tarawa’s existence.
