The project was approved by the World Bank's Board of Directors in September 2010 and was declared effective in February 2011. During the past 12 months, the following actions have been achieved: (i) signing of contract for the installation of additional 5MW to the existing Bujumbura Thermal Power Plant. Civil works have started and the commissioning of the plant is expected by March 2013; (ii) signing of contract for the rehabilitation of existing hydropower plants; (iii) signing of contract for MV network rehabilitation works in Bujumbura; and (iv) procurement Public Disclosure Copy of 15,000 pre-payment meters. All the meters were received in Bujumbura and the installation is expected to be fully achieved by February 2013. The implementation of major activities of the project is likely to be completed by its closing date which is January 2014.
