It will demonstrate to policy makers the effectiveness of a crafts- based cluster approach to poverty alleviation and to improve living conditions for weavers and embroiderers (especially women and girls) and their families in targeted communities in Punjab and Sindh. The project aims to assist an estimated 2,600 vulnerable artisan families/households, especially targeting women headed households, at the bottom of the pyramid to help them rebuild their lives, access sustainable livelihoods through establishing their own artisan institutions and consequently achieve arobust economic and social empowerment. With an average family size of 7 individuals in each household in the project areas, the project is expected to benefit an overall population of about 18,200 individuals. Out of the total number of beneficiaries, 70% of the beneficiaries are expected to be women. Has the Project Development Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Project Objective? The mission had discussions with several artisan groups and their representatives. The artisans appreciated the capacity building training, new and improved designs, work orders and fair rates provided by the project. The mission found that the project was targeting the most vulnerable and poor artisans and providing them with high quality skill training and all of them mentioned that the money they received corresponded with their skill level. The artisans mentioned that the skill trainings provided by the project have helped them to focus on qual ity, neatness, timeliness of delivery and working as a group. They mentioned that as a result of these trainings they were able to work faster as a team to ensure timely delivery of finished products. The artisans mentioned that the training provided by the project team has also been used to fulfill local orders. The mission noted that the artisans are looking to the project team to provide them with new designs and linkages with national and local markets. Outreach and Livelihood impacts: The mission noted that in line with the mission objectives, the project has made a significant jump from the progress reported in the last Aide Memoire of February 2016. The project has conducted a significant number of skill development and institutional building acti vities in all project districts. The project has established a design unit for capacity building of semi-skilled artisans by developing contemporary marketable products. The project had initiated developing contemporary products for the semi-skilled artisans and provided focused training to them by the trained master artisans so that they can earn sustainable livelihoods through crafts. The project has also partnered with the Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) in community mobilization at the grassroots level in Sindh, especially in the districts of Sukkur and Khairpur. Accordingly the project signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SRSO on June 9, 2016. Design and Product Development Interventions: Developing a Designer Database: RANG has established linkages with IQRA School of Fashion Design. As a result, they have a team of young fashion designers that are currently working with the project. This will ensure that there is a steady stream of new design concepts to the artisan groups. In addition, they have hired local fashion designers at the two Artisan Design and Resource Centers (ADRCs). The project is now looking for a lead Fashion Designer to oversee its design unit for the three product ranges. Although the project did receive a setback due to the premature resignation of the Chief Designer and Value Chain expert, the project was able to quickly put in place a good design team for carrying out product and design development in the field. Artisan Design and Resource Centers: The project has established three Artisan Design and resource Centers at Hyderabad, Bahawalpur and Islamabad. These centers are providing design development services and training to the artisan to develop new contemporary designs and high quality finishing of the products for the retail stores and racks. Artisan institution building: RANG has developed a robust institution building strategy, which includes community based bookkeeping and account systems, group and higher level community institution management systems.
