The mid-term review of the project will be carried out in Cape Verde and Senegal in February, and Liberia and Sierra Leone in March, culminating in a regional workshop to exchange lessons learned, hosted by the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (CSRP). In the last six months, the activities to be implemented in Senegal have been restructured, so that the project is back on track in that country. Progress continues to be encouraging in Cape Verde, Liberia and Sierra Leone, though of course challenges remain. In particular, illegal trawling in the coastal waters has been reduced significantly in recent months and the past year in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and anecdotal reports from communities indicate higher fish catch as a result. The project is on track in these countries to support clearing out the illegal fishing as a first step, and the Governments are now turning attention to building up policies, laws and institutions for the development of a more sustainable and viable sector to replace this. These efforts will be the subject of the upcoming mid-term review.
