As such, the South Sudan Country Engagement Note (CEN) highlighted the SNSDP as one of the flagship projects in the portfolio. To date, the project has benefitted more than 85,000 individuals in close to 11,000 poor and vulnerable beneficiary households and has transferred nearly US$ 2 million for close to 780,000 total person days worked in Juba City and Torit County. Of the total beneficiaries, 72 percent are females (against the end target of 50 percent) and 30 percent are internally displaced persons (IDPs), with beneficiaries representing diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. The income from the public works transfers has helped beneficiaries access necessities such as food, clothes, and medicine, as well as pay for their children’s education. The financial literacy training provided by the implementing agency has helped beneficiaries to manage their earnings better. Some beneficiaries have also used part of their earnings from the public work to start small income generating activities. In addition, community assets have been built/rehabilitated, which in turn has improved access to basic services. For example, roads maintenance through public works has improved access for trucks delivering water and the price of water has reduced from the level before the improvement of the roads. Moreover, solid waste disposal and opening of drainage lines contributed to cleanness and environmental sanitation of the neighborhoods where the public work activities took place. In complement, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) training provided during the public works gathering has raised awareness, and community members have organized themselves and conducted cleaning of their neighborhood voluntarily with no payment from the project. Perhaps most importantly, the public works has created an opportunity for beneficiaries to collaborate and work together which has fostered greater sense of unity and social cohesion.
