All project activities are advancing and are expected to meet both project closing deadlines and targets set under indicators (except for the pilot activity for the provision of transportation to female students and teachers, which has been cancelled due to COVID-19 and SED reprioritization). Nonetheless, COVID-19 has impacted activities requiring physical presence and which have suffered delays; the recruitment of teachers for project supported schools, the planned teacher training, and the PIU’s ability to collect field data. Mitigation measures are already in place to enable all activities to be completed on time despite delays. The signing of construction contracts for the rehabilitation of classrooms in 300 schools are in the process of being finalized, and rehabilitations are planned to be completed by April 2021, ahead of project closing. 8/31/2020 Page 1 of 8 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Global Partnership for Education - Balochistan Education Project (P144454) The SED, the PIU, the European Union and the World Bank are in the process of finalizing a proposal for the reallocation of savings which have materialized under the project so far. During the last Project Coordination Committee meeting held on July 17, 2020 (chaired by the Secretary of Education of Balochistan, and with the participation of the European Union, UNICEF and the World Bank), it was agreed that savings would be redirected towards new COVID-19-related response activities that fit within the project’s existing legal framework, and which would not require the amendment of the project’s PC-I, nor legal documents, nor require a restructuring of the project from the World Bank side. Furthermore, the World Bank emphasized the importance of finalizing newly planned activities at the earliest to allow enough implementation time before project closing.
