Component 1 (Quality Improvement for University Programs – QIF Programs). Despite the overall decline due to the political situation, the following was achieved: - Eight QIF programs in six universities resumed study for the new academic year in October and November 2016, while the remaining four QIF programs in two universities (Aden and Hadramout) will start in December 2016. - The first batch of seven 4-year QIF Programs students graduated from August to November 2016 in the following disciplines: Business Administration Program (AlHodidah University), Biochemical Program (Thamar University), Computer Sciences Program (Hajjah University), Applied Physics Program (Ibb University), Basic Education Program (Sana’a University), Medical Laboratory Sciences Program (Aden University) and Marine Biology Program (Hadramout University). - A Few graduates were recruited: (a) Nine graduates from the Medical Lab Sciences Program at Aden University were recruited in government and private health institutions before their official graduation; (b) Nine graduates from the Basic Education Program at Sana'a University were recruited as teachers in schools; (c) one graduate from the Computer Science Program at Hajjah University was hired by a software firm owned by a member of the QIF Program’s Advisory Committee (PAC); and (d) four students out of 27 from the Business Administration Program at AlHodidah University were hired in the private sector, though not in their field of specialization. - Focus Groups discussions were conducted with students before graduation to gather useful data, including how the students learnt of the programs, how the QIF programs differ in terms of specializations, enhanced employability, evaluation of courses, improved curriculum and student assessment, field training and employability skills. In particular, students expressed their dissatisfaction with some of the academic staff and availability of laboratories, which negatively affected the implementation of the programs as they were intended. - Despite some delays, the construction of the new building for the Mechatronics program in Sanaa University was successfully completed and furnished with the support of the private sector (a Yemeni business man) - It is unfortunate that the programs couldn’t make use of practical training using lab equipment that was planned under the project due to the adverse conditions and the suspension of disbursement. For Component 2 (Quality Assurance) and Component 3 (Institutional Capacity Development), activities are on hold until the political/security situation is resolved.
