The end of the project METT score is 69.6 which is an improvement from the mid-term score of 63. This shows a marked improvement in the Comments: effective management of the Hwange National Park from a fair baseline score to a good score at the end of the project. IN00777183 ►Stable carbon sequestration in project forest reserves. (Percentage, Custom) Baseline Actual (Previous) Actual (Current) End Target Value 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 Date 01-Jul-2014 31-May-2019 17-Dec-2019 31-Dec-2019 Change in the carbon content was measured using the NDVI proxy to measure forest degradation. Plots were established to measure NDVI. From a total of fifty randomly selected points in the two forests, NDVI values for 2015, 2017, and 2019 were calculated. Both forests experienced an increase in NDVI between Comments: 2015 and 2017. In 2019 the NDVI value dropped for both forests although the figure was above that of the base year 2015 (see table below). Carbon sequestration is highly correlated with NDVI. The analysis points out that there was no decrease in carbon sequestration from 2015-2019. This indicator is included in the project because it is mandated by the GEF who are interested in consolidating results globally for this indicator, even if in Comments: certain projects the target is set at zero. Between January -June 2019, 4 incursions were recorded, 15 arrests made, 2 firearms recovered and 76.6 pieces of ivory. A total of 24 elephants were killed all from Comments: rifle poaching in HNP. This is a reduction from the 32 elephants poached during the same period in 2018. . The vulnerability of elephants to the 2018/2019 drought resulted in conflicts with the communities as the elephants moved for long distances to get feed and water beyond the park. The main conflicts are crop raiding from elephants Comments: with only one incident of livestock attack from a lion in 2017 in Sithembile and Mpilo villages. No new data was collected for this indicator during the period under review. The area brought under forest management plans is based on the total area for the two gazetted forests (Ngamo and Sikumi) The METT Comments: scores for the two gazetted forests Ngamo & Sikumi are expected to improve from the mid-term score of 66 for Sikumi and 67 for Ngamo given the investments towards effective fire and game water management, anti-poaching, community livelihoods initiatives and piloting of REDD+. Overall, the two gazetted forests have already been brought under improved management with clear management plans.
