During the seven-year implementation period, the project was able to achieve most of the results envisioned under the project development objective (PDO) aimed at improving solid waste management services in the Gaza Strip. Around 94 percent of waste generated in the project area is disposed at the sanitary landfill constructed under the project, which became operational in 2019. An estimated 921,400 beneficiaries out of the target beneficiary population of 948,000 have already been reached, and this target is on track to be achieved by project completion. 4/2/2021 Page 1 of 10 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Gaza Solid Waste Management Project (P121648) An additional financing (AF) of US$ 3.25 million (US$2.00 million from the Global Partnership for Results-Based Approaches (GPRBA) and US$1.25 million from the Partnership for Infrastructure Development – Multi-Donor Trust Fund Partnership (PID-MDTF) has been approved in August 2020 and became effective in November 2020. The closing date of the project is accordingly extended to June 2022.The GPRBA AF is providing key operational funding support for the Joint Services Council for Khan Younis, Rafah and Middle Area (JSC-KRM), solid waste service provider in southern Gaza. Improved and upgraded Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been developed and adopted by the JSC-KRM since September 2020 and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for operating the landfill and transfer station facilities have been introduced. The implementation and achievement of the KPIs are being independently monitored and verified by an independent verification agent (IVA) hired through the GPRBA financing. The assessment report for first result verification period (July-December 2020) is currently undergoing review and evaluation.
