Good progress has been made in the past year on disaster management and preparedness systems, including installation of seismic stations, completion of Provincial Disaster Centers, and review of National Disaster Management legislation. Under Component 2, five pilot micro-projects are currently under implementation to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities and an additional 50 micro-projects in the island of Tanna (a priority area for Cyclone Pam recovery investments) have been selected and are now in the planning and preparatory stage. Investments to rehabilitate the Tongoa Water System are also expected to begin soon. Most of the remaining food crop resilience and rural water security investments originally planned under Components 3 and 4 are expected to be integrated into the micro-project investments for the communities most severely impacted by Cyclone Pam. The restructuring is also intended to simply the project’s complex institutional and implementation arrangements, which were a contributing factor in the project’s early implementation delays.
