The Project would provide approximately 86 communities in predominantly indigenous rural areas with solar- based electricity (of which services to approximately 40 communities would be financed by Bank and GEF funds). The Federal Electricity Comission (Comisión Federal de Electricidad, CFE) has finalized 2 pilots in Guaycora, Sonora and La Ciénega, Nayarit, benefiting about 200 inhabitants. Such pilot projects have had a considerable impact on the daily lives of beneficiaries, through (i) the possibility of storing food/medicine in refrigerators, (ii) the possibility of improving education through multimedia/electronic tools, and (iii) the possibility of carrying out activities where lighting is needed, like sewing, reading, etc. The bidding process for the first cluster of 5 solar farms to be financed by the Bank was completed in October 2013, and works are in progress. Three additional procurement processes for the remaining solar farms (approximately 30) are progressing and are expected to be all launched before the end of February 2014. Overall Implementation Progress (IP) remains as MU. A new ISR will be prepared and PDO, GEO and IP indicators will be revised to Moderately Satisfactory (MS) once the first disbursement is effective (which is expected early February 2014).
