The project received US$ 150 million additional financing in May 31, 2012 with three years extension to the original project closing date from December 31, 2012 to December 31, 2015. The proceeds of the additional financing will be utilized to expand and upgrade the capacity of the waste treatment system in Addis Ababa, to cover the financing gap of the other four secondary cities and to include new additional Federal city (Dire Dawa). Significant progress has been made towards the achievement of the project development objectives in terms of production and distribution of additional water from improved sources. A total of about 245,000 M3 /day clean water has been produced from 35 wells and from rehabilitation and expansion of existing reservoir and treatment plant capacity in Addis Ababa. So far about 66,000 M3/ day of additional water ( 44% of the end project target, which is 150,000 M3/day), have been supplied in to the system including additional water obtained from Addis Ababa and Gondar through rehabilitation of existing system and reduction of Non Revenue Water (NRW). When the civil works and electro mechanical works are completed and the developed sources are connected to the distribution systems, the project will account more than 100% of end project target. This largely is due to the more than expected high yield of the ground water in Addis. So far about 1.7 million beneficiaries are served through new connections and improved services. The current project closing date is December 31, 2015. However, given the time required to complete the two large contracts in Addis Ababa (signed just recently - October 2014 - with a project period of 18 months), AAWSA and MoWIE will need to review possibilities of accelerated implementation and consider extension of the project closing date and/or commit to finance the activities beyond the closing date. It was agreed that the GoE will carry out this review and submit its request to the Bank by March 2015, at the latest.
