As of November 2021, 66 cultural heritage subprojects have been completed, including seven Large Window subprojects and 59 Small Window subprojects. The total number of visitors to the cultural heritage sites supported by the Project and selected during the first year of the Project implementation exceeded 12.9 million people since 2015 when the first subproject was completed. The Project is on track to meet the target of completing at least 79 cultural heritage preservation subprojects by the loan closing date in June 2022. The completed Large Window sub-projects for the conservation and restoration of the cultural heritage sites include Tver Traveling Palace in Tver oblast; White Tower, Ryurikovo Gorodische, and Korostyn Travelling Palace in Novgorod oblast; Varlaam Corner of Pskov Kremlin, and Postinkov Estate in Pskov oblast, Vyborg Castle in Leningrad oblast. 12/1/2021 Page 1 of 6 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report RUSSIA CULTURAL HERITAGE 2 (P120219) As for the Small Window supported investments, the local cultural institutions are using resources from this subcomponent to invest in multimedia and in information and communications technologies (ICT). Multimedia improves the quality of services available and attracts more visitors, while ICT enables larger, more centrally located cultural institutions to connect with users located in remote areas to, for example, broadcast theatre and philharmonic orchestra performances, thus benefiting previously underserved populations. The Project is also financing 16 subprojects to test museum security practices in the project participating regions (four subprojects per region). 15 of these subprojects have been completed, and the remaining one in Korela Fortress (Leningrad oblast) is planned for completion in the second quarter of 2022. The Project supported the implementation of two training sub-programs— (i) Investment Management and (ii) Management of Museum Collections. A total of 780 participants benefited from these programs, including 321 individuals who attended the Investment Management training, and 459 who attended the Management of Museum Collections. 70 percent of respondents gave a positive assessment of the program thematic modules and training methods as part of the survey conducted at the program completion stage. Also, more than 1,350 employees of cultural institutions have also been trained in cultural heritage management practices as part of short-term training activities. As predicted, due to COVID19-imposed lockdown measures and travel restrictions, the number of visitors in 2020 was significantly lower than in 2019, but there are Comments: expectations that the data in 2021 will pick up, following the increase in domestic tourism in Russia observed in 2021.
