The AF will support both new and parent project activities including teacher training, provision of teaching learning materials, construction of additional schools and strengthening of the Ministry of Education (MoE) system. The expanded scope under the AF is expected to reinforce the impact achieved under the parent project. Full implementation of AF activities is yet to commence. Brief implementation progress of the project is provided below. 1. Improving the quality of teaching and learning conditions in language arts, science, and mathematics in targeted primary and secondary schools  Preparatory work for the second-round teacher training, including finalizing the training modules has been completed. In addition, implementation of the school experience (practicum/teaching practice) for the trainee teachers from the 12 Colleges of Education took place during term two and three (between 2020-2021). A total of 300 trainee teachers participated in the school experience. With the AF, teacher trainings will be reoriented to emphasize school- based activities.  The review of the piloted textbook reforms, which included the procurement and distribution of the Grades 5 and 8 mathematics and science textbooks has been completed and is pending endorsement and adoption. The procurement of the second batch of mathematics and science textbooks is under content and price evaluation. The new electronic book tracking system that will support MoE to monitor distribution of books and usage of textbooks has been developed and is expected to go live in the first quarter of 2022. In addition, the MoE has finished the development of the self-learning materials in mathematics and science which is expected to support students catch up from the learning losses due to forced closure during COVID 19 in 2020 and early 2021. The AF will expand provision of teaching and learning materials in the subject areas to almost 2,700 schools from the current 382, 2. Increasing access to safe secondary schools.  The connection of 38 schools to the national grid by Zambia Electricity Supply Company (ZESCO) has made good progress. Provision of solar panels for the other 44 schools and installation of the water reticulation in 82 schools is expected early next year.  The MoE has implemented a tablet-based monitoring system that allows remote monitoring of construction activities at each construction site.  With the AF, an additional 120 schools (approximately) will be constructed. 3. Strengthening institutional capacity for education service delivery and project management.  The high-level sensitization workshops for senior managements on school related gender-based violence (SRGBV) have been held. Provision of telephone services under the project’s grievance redress mechanism (GRM) system is expected in early 2022. 4. Enhancing institutional capacity for implementation of safe school program  Through the AF, support will be provided to address issues of school related gender violence to ensure schools are places of safety for learners especially girls.
