All core activities of the project have been completed, including training and qualification upgrading for teachers, school directors/deputy directors, subnational and national officers, and local authority representatives; construction of school buildings and teacher houses; renovations of classrooms and installment of science laboratories; provision of on-site coaching and support to school and teachers; procurement of necessary goods and services; and others. The project team has been working on the project readiness activities for a new education project including drafting the project operations manual, carrying out advance procurement activities, developing school community strategy, developing teacher training strategies, identifying high-performing schools to obtain school mentoring grants, providing capacity building for the teams from early childhood and primary education departments, identifying competent and committed teachers and school directors/deputy directors to stand ready for mentoring support to others, etc. In terms of meeting its development objective (expand lower secondary education to achieve minimum standards in target areas), the project has (a) benefited 65,155 students (of whom 34,268 were females), (b) greatly reduced the dropout rate in targeted schools (to 5.3 percent (4.7 percent 2/25/2022 Page 1 of 13 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Secondary Education Improvement Project (P157858) for females) , compared to a national average of 18.3% (2020-2021and (c) increased the percentages of students with Grades A, B, and C for Math from 14 percent (16 percent for females) in 2019 to 35 percent (36 percent for females) in 2021 and for Khmer from 25 percent (30 percent for females) to 48 percent (50 percent for females) during the same period. The percentages of the students who have fallen behind their grades have also been greatly reduced.
