Has the Project Development Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Project Objective? No Components Table Name Transport Corridors Improvements:(Cost $352.31 M) Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building in the Road Sector:(Cost $20.46 M) Project Implementation and Monitoring:(Cost $11.35 M) Overall Ratings Name Previous Rating Current Rating Progress towards achievement of PDO Satisfactory Satisfactory Overall Implementation Progress (IP) Satisfactory Satisfactory Overall Risk Rating Moderate Moderate Implementation Status and Key Decisions The project is progressing towards achieving the Project Development Objectives; namely to improve road transport connectivity and safety on selected road sections along Expressway 1 and the North - South transport corridor in KRG. Two important segments of Expressway No. 1 between Nasiria and Rumaila and between Rumaila - E1 - Basra Junction – towards Basra, a total of 225 kilometers have been rehabilitated improving traffic safety and reducing travel time. 1,200.000 work-day jobs for skilled and unskilled Iraq labor have been created in the process. Another segment towards Sefwan (29 km) is currently under rehabilitation with a new segment between Fallujah towards Ramadi (40 km) under preparation. Girsheen and Suheila ,the key achievement is the reduction in the fatalities along the segments of Expressway No. 1 where the baseline had an average of 95 fatalities annually. To date and after 5 years of implementation , the estimated 333 fatalities have been reduced to 25. This demonstrates that the rehabilitation activities including new pavement, marking, guardrails and fences are already contributing to saving Iraqi lives. 12/13/2021 Page 1 of 7 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Transport Corridors Project (P131550) Moreover, the rehabilitation of these segments are being implemented in Al-Muthana governorate (one of the poorest and highest unemployment in Iraq) generating about 1,200,000 labor-days in direct and in-direct and for skilled and unskilled workers in the region. By the end of the project, it is expected that over 1.5 million labor-days will be achieved. Enforcement of speed limits along major road corridors especially along Expressway No. 1 between Baghdad and Basra continues to be a concern with an action needed from the relevant traffic police authorities. Such control will help reduce fatal accidents. Enforcement of axle load controls of trucks exiting Um Qasr seaport is underway at the new station. The presence of relevant police personnel will ensure a satisfactory operation of this station and reduction in damages to Expressway No. 1 from overloaded trucks.
