Has the Project Development Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Project Objective? The draft National Strategy on Mercury management – incorporating inputs from the sectoral and provincial sub-strategies and action plans – has been submitted to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) for review and approval. The Strategy is expected to be improved based on several iterations as well as extensive consultations with 17 ministries (members of the Minamata Convention Coordination Committee) and other key stakeholders. The national level mercury flow Management Information System (MIS) has been endorsed by MEE and National Statistics Bureau (NSB) and has been integrated into the National Environmental Statistics System. This is a breakthrough achievement, filling the gap of a dedicated sub-system for mercury in the national information systems, including those that target international conventions such as the Minamata Convention. The pilot activities in the 12/17/2021 Page 1 of 5 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Capacity Strengthening for Implementation of Minamata Convention on Mercury Project (P151281) provinces and municipality are close to completion, except for dissemination and additional contaminated sites assessment. These analytical studies and pilot activities are establishing the building blocks that will support China’s long-term environmentally sound management of mercury, mercury reduction and phase-out efforts, and readiness to implement the National Strategy.
