Contracts for upgrading of 108km rural roads have been signed in 6 States (Katsina, Sokoto, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Abia and Bauchi) at a total cost of $37 million. Other participating States are at different stages of completing the engineering design, bidding documents and bidding processing for another 850km of roads at estimated cost of $165 million. States will continue to award contracts for rural roads rehabilitation and maintenance as the pre-construction activities are being completed, between May 2023 through March 2024. In addition, pre-construction activities are ongoing for rehabilitation of Agro-logistics centers. Civil works contracts for the rehabilitation of the Centers will began in 2024. This is due to long delay in project effectiveness ( about 13 months), delay in approving the borrowing plan and late release of IDA fund to the project. However, the project would not be able to deliver on the end targets due to high cost construction materials (bitumen, fuel, cement. reinforcement etc), high inflations and depreciation in national currency. In this regards, the project would be restructured in May 2023 to revise the indicators. Therefore, measurement of intermediate indicators will began in October 2023 when sections of roads are expected to be delivered. Measuring PDO indicators would also began in first quarter 2024.
