Implementation Status and Key Decisions
The KTDA Small Hydro Programme of Activities (PoA) is an engagement between the World Bank and KTDA Power Company Limited (KTPC), a
subsidiary of the Kenya Tea Development Agency Holding Limited (KTDA) established in the year 2010. The Project Development Objective (PDO)
is to monetize and transact greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions from renewable energy produced by small hydropower plants benefiting smallholder
tea farmers in rural Kenya. The Project is being implemented by KTPC
KTPC is implementing twenty-three (23) small hydropower plants in thirteen (13) counties, with the overall objective of providing cheaper power to
the tea factories, thereby reducing their cost of production, and increasing returns to farmers. The PDO rating and Implementation Progress rating
are both Moderately Satisfactory and the PDO remains relevant. The project is already providing about 36 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity
generated from SHPs under this project, to 14 KTDA tea factories and a total of 246,047 farmers are benefitting from lower factory production
costs.
