Chad and the Economic Community for Central African States (ECCAS) became effective in March 2020, Angola on June 23, 2020, CAR on August 26, 2020, and ROC and DRC became effective on September 1, 2020. These countries and ECCAS have been implementing the project whose activities 2/20/2024 Page 1 of 25 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Regional Disease Surveillance Systems Enhancement Project (REDISSE) Phase IV (P167817) were prioritized to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020-2021 period. In 2022, the project resumed the implementation of its originally planned activities and some highlights are presented as follows:  Country teams have been liaising frequently with development partners (WHO, Africa CDC, US Agency for International Development, UNICEF, IOM other UN agencies) in the area of health security.  Country teams have been at the front of the response to current public health threats such as Ebola virus disease, MPox, Meningitis, etc.  Countries and regional technical and steering committees have been established and are operational.  Surveillance training at different levels in both human and animal health on Integrated Animal Disease Surveillance and Response and the Third Edition of Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) has been carried out.  Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) and environmental health and community health have been carried out in REDISSE IV countries, with a total of 25 percent women trained.  Laboratory capacity has been strengthened through training, development of norms and standards and rehabilitation of public health laboratories in several REDISSE IV countries Progress towards project implementation achievements include the consolidation of most country project teams, update of the results framework with indicators from the most recent Joint External Evaluation by the World Health Organization, showing improvement in surveillance, cross-border exchange, the development of a multi-hazard preparedness and response plan. Overall, there has also been improvement of the communication and visibility of the Project in the Health Security space. However, there are still some challenges with the validation of the basic legal texts for multisectoral One Health platforms and for the creation and operationalization of the Central African Regional Animal Health Center (CRSA-AC), and alignment of the regional and country workplans for better identification/coordination of technical assistance activities.
